EPA's Pruitt Pledges To Repeal Obama's Global Warming Rule

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt's proposal to repeal the Clean Power Plan - a federal rule requiring power plants to clean up their carbon pollution - threatens to sicken and kill tens of thousands of Americans and put millions more at risk from extreme weather and other impacts of climate change. "It is not in the interests of the EPA, or in accord with its mission of environmental protection consistent with the rule of law, to expend its resources along the path of implementing a rule, receiving and passing judgment on state plans, or promulgating federal plans in furtherance of a policy that is not within the bounds of our statutory authority", the agency says.

The Clean Power Plan required states to devise a way to cut planet-warming emissions by 32% below 2005 levels by 2030.

The Sierra Club also criticized the Trump administration's decision describing the move as a "deadly mistake".

The EPA won't prescribe an immediate replacement to the plan, but will seek public comment on whether to curb climate-warming emissions from coal and natural gas power plants.

That order called on the EPA to review the Clean Power Plan to determine whether it overstepped the authority of government when it called for stricter emissions limits. The Obama rule was expected to significantly hurt the coal industry, since coal-fired power plants are the biggest carbon emitters. A plant-specific approach "would be grossly insufficient to address the public health and environmental impacts from Carbon dioxide emissions", Obama's EPA said.

The Supreme Court put the plan on hold a year ago. Almost 200 countries have committed to combat global warming by reducing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. He said that on Tuesday, he will sign a proposed rule to formally withdraw from the plan. It's pretty embarrassing that they don't actually have a different plan ready to go, they just see something that's good for the environment and want to destroy it.

President Donald Trump's administration will kill the centerpiece of President Barack Obama's climate change action.

"By saving an estimated 240 million tons of annual coal production, the administrator's action helps to safeguard more than 27,000 mining jobs and nearly 100,000 additional jobs throughout the supply chain", Hal Quinn, CEO of the National Mining Association, said in a statement.

The New York Times reports that last week, an EPA document revealed that the Clean Power Plan would be repealed. A leaked copy of the EPA's repeal argues that the us would save $33 billion by not complying with the regulation, and that it doesn't provide significant health benefits, as the Obama administration claimed.
