Manchester City announce Mendy's injury by cutting in the crucifixion

Fabian Delph continues at left-back in the absence of Benjamin Mendy, who underwent surgery on Friday in a bid to cure the ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, and Gabriel Jesus leads the line in place of Sergio Aguero, who is sidelined after a road accident.

Following the procedure, Mendy posted a picture on Twitter, with the caption: 'Surgery done: Jese and I nailed it. See you asap guys'.

City hoped the problem would not be serious, and there was even talk of a fitness test prior to Tuesday's Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk, but it is worse than initially thought.

Antonio Conte's side have recovered brilliantly after their opening-day defeat to Burnley - and they were only side to beat City home and away last season.

But Guardiola insisted yesterday that he is not concerned by his players' off-field activities.

"I don't know right now [if City will sign someone]".

Mendy then played in the games against Liverpool, Feyenoord, Watford and Palace, with City keeping clean sheets in each one.

Mendy's injury is a major setback for City as it comes just before their trip to Chelsea on Saturday and the prospect of losing the 23-year old for the rest of the season severely weakens Guardiola's strategy as the left-back was a key part of his summer squad rebuild.

Mendy became the world's most expensive defender in the summer after joining City from Monaco for £52m.

City released left back Gael Clichy in the summer while Aleksandar Kolarov asked to leave to join Roma.
