Mega Millions price hike comes amid declining revenue

The starting jackpot will increase from $15 million to $40 million. Tickets will go up to $2 and players will be able to purchase tickets for up to 14 consecutive draws - basic Powerball tickets have been $2 since January 2012.

A regular Mega Millions ticket will now have a 1 in 24 chance of winning some kind of prize. Introduced as The Big Game in August 1996 with six member states, the game grew, becoming Mega Millions in May 2002.

There's also a brand new way to play the Mega Millions that's being rolled out in six states to start, including MA, called "Just The Jackpot". The game is now offered in 44 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Washington D.C.

Heads up if you regularly buy tickets for a Mega Millions drawing, as the prices are going up. But those whose eyes are on the top prize can pay $3 for two entries to jackpot-only tickets, according to the lottery.

Mega Millions is now offered for sale in 44 states, plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Mega Millions President Debbie D. Alford says it's all about keeping up with players' tastes.

The $2 ticket price makes it the same price as a Powerball ticket.
