New missile test feared as S. Korea-US drill starts

The exercise involves nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and its carrier strike group.

A high-ranking North Korean official says the country's development of nuclear weapons is necessary because of the threat posed by the United States and contends the nuclear program is for deterrence. Joint drills like these have antagonized North Korea in the past, and there are concerns Pyongyang will react with its own display of force.

With the U.S. mulling military intervention in North Korea, Russia and China have been calling for restraint.

Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, who visited South Korea last week, said the Chinese Communist Party's national party congress, which opens on Wednesday, could be a trigger for new provocative action by North Korea. But the growing range and accuracy seen in the North's missile tests has prompted the 29-nation alliance to review its missile defence system, which has been partially operational from a base in Romania since previous year. "Based on this, we have judged that the North could launch a provocation at any time", the source said. "But history proves that we must be able to defend ourselves".

However unlikely, if North Korea eventually refrained itself from provocation until next month when US President Trump is slated to visit South Korea and other countries in the region, it would help create momentum for negotiation, analysts said. He also expressed hopes that the diplomacy would work before the regime grows its missile capability.

Bishop said a pair of Australian warships will soon be heading to South Korea as part of their mutual defense agreement. "Whether the North would conduct further provocations depends on how the USA and North Korea play their games". Pyongyang's latest diatribe comes in the wake of the USA dispatching its powerful and strategic military assets to the Korean peninsula to carry out drills.
