Shell collaboration helps power London buses with coffee waste

A biofuel created by blending oil extracted from coffee waste with diesel is to be added to the public transport fuel supply, BBC reported.

Transport for London and Shell have partnered with tech firm bio-bean to blend oil from coffee grounds with diesel.

-Biofuel made using waste products such as tallow from meat processing and cooking oil had already supplied in numerous capital's 9,500 buses. Bio-bean estimates that 2.55 million cups of coffee is all that's needed to fuel a single London bus for a year on B20 biofuel and that means if just over one million of London's near 9 million population drank their average 2.3 cups of coffee a day, a single bus could run on cleaner fuel for a year. Bio-Bean says that's enough to theoretically power one third of the city's bus network, and that 2.5 million cups make around 6,000 liters of oil - or about a year's worth of sustainable fuel for one London bus. The London's buses will soon be powered by this biofuel.

Bio-bean has been using coffee to deliver energy for a short while now, giving households the ability to burn coffee instead of wood for their fires.

Bio-bean founder Arthur Kay said the latest project was a "great example of what can be done when we start to reimagine waste as an untapped resource", highlighting statistics that Londoners produce more than 200,000 tonnes of waste coffee a year.

Bio-Bean's biofuel is then directly put into selected London buses, which if continued, can decrease emissions from the transport industry through innovations in second-generation biofuels.

Sinead Lynch, Shell UK country chair, said, "When it comes to clean energy, we are always looking for the next inventive solution". If it were exclusively combined with the mineral diesel that would produce enough fuel to power a London bus every day for a year.
